Glazing: single, double, structural; and fire resistant

IBT is routinely asked to investigate problems with glass manufacture and non-performance in use.  Examples include the following:

Photo showing "roller pick-up" also sometimes referred to as "roller pluck" caused by glass in a toughening oven passing over rollers that have picked up debris from glass that has shattered during toughening.  IBT has investigated a number of instances in recent years.

Photo showing surface corrosion caused by water droplets being retained on the glass sufficiently long for the droplets to develop alkalinity and degrade the surface.  IBT has investigated three instances in recent years.

Photo showing roller wave distortion in toughened glass.  When IBT is involved in procuring glass, careful vetting of the glass suppliers is undertaken to help minimise the distortion that occurs.

Photo: nickel sulphide induced breakage of toughened glass:  IBT routinely undertakes nickel sulphide inclusion related investigations and acts as an expert witness on associated legal cases.

Photo:  IBT routinely undertakes site surveys to establish the glass configurations used.  IBT cautions against use of non-laminated glass in any barriers that prevent a fall from a height.  The photo shows an example of a glass barrier temporarily protected in case of glass breakage after a nearby pane of toughened, non-laminated, bolted glass spontaneously shattered and fell.  No-one was injured.  All of the panes of glass were subsequently replaced with laminated glass.

Photo:  The photo shows replacement glazing fixed to stainless steel fins after non-laminated toughened glass structural fins failed in high wind.  IBT undertook the failure investigation and advised on remedial works.

Photos:  Details of failed, external fire resistant glazing.  IBT undertook the subsequent technical investigation and identified the causes of failure of the two systems used.

Photo:  Example of a double glazed unit exhibiting condensation in the cavity. IBT investigated the case involving more than 50 unit failures and concluded they resulted from a failure to maintain drained window rebates.
